US President Donald Trump said on Monday that he would work with Brazil's President-elect Jair Bolsonaro in the areas of trade and the Armed Forces. PSL candidate defeated Fernando Haddad (PT) in the second round, with 55% of the votes.
On Sunday, Bolsonaro had already stated that Trump wished him good luck over the phone. "I just got a call from some of the leaders, including the president of the United States just called us, wished us good luck, and obviously it was a very friendly contact," the newly elected president said in a live broadcast via network Social.
On Twitter, Bolsonaro said he expressed the "desire to bring these two great nations closer together" in order to advance "on the path of freedom and prosperity!".
After confirmation of Bolsonaro's victory, several foreign leaders and governments expressed themselves and the newly elected president once again stated that he intends to "approach various countries in the world without ideological bias."
"That is why we need a good foreign minister to talk to the whole world, thinking of a project of Brazil to do commerce, logically without harming our entrepreneur, our industrialist here in Brazil, seeking partnerships with these countries so that our economy begins to walk, "said the president-elect.
Bolsonaro's victory interrupts a PT winning streak, which began in 2002. At age 63, retired Army captain, a federal deputy since 1991 and owner of an extensive list of controversial statements, Jair Bolsonaro has been given the presidential term of 2019 to 2022.
