The United States Army on Monday sent 29,500 troops to the country's border with Mexico in an effort to contain the caravan of Central American immigrants, said Gen. Terrence OShaughnessy, who heads the Command North of the USA. The shipment, under an operation called Faithful Patriot, is already underway, according to the general.
Terrence OShaughnessy explained that the military will work together with CBP agents, the customs and border protection agency, and will focus first on strengthening border security in Texas, followed by Arizona and California. "I think the president (Donald Trump) has made it clear that border security is a matter of national security," he told a news conference in Washington.
The number is well above the 800 soldiers originally planned and would amount to a third of the border agents operating in the area. Source: Dow Jones Newswires.
