Six people, including a pregnant woman, fell from the 95th floor to the 11th in a skyscraper in the city of Chicago, United States.
Despite the 84-story drop, all the people trapped in the elevator survived.
After the incident, last Friday, they sent mobile messages to friends, who called emergency services.
People were only able to get out of the elevator after three hours, when firefighters were able to rescue them by punching a hole in the wall.
Abrupt fall
The group had left a bar on the 95th floor to go to the lobby.
Tourist Jaime Montemayor, 50, was in the elevator with his wife. He said he first felt the elevator go down normally - when it suddenly began to fall.
According to him, the group heard the noise of something breaking, and then realized that it was beginning to leak dust into the cabin.
People shouted, prayed and cried, according to the account. "I thought we were going to die," said Montemayor, who had come from Mexico to visit the city on CBS 2.
When they arrived at the scene, the firefighters found that there was no elevator exit door on the 11th floor. They managed to rescue people by making an opening in the concrete wall.
"We could not make a rescue for the normal exits. We had to open a wall on the 11th floor of the parking lot to get the doors open," said Patrick Maloney of the Chicago Fire Department.
At least one of the cables holding the elevator is believed to have been broken, but the incident remains under investigation, according to an interview given by a city clerk to the Chicago Tribune.
It is not yet clear how the equipment stopped before reaching the ground. ABC television said firefighters said two cables had broken but that there were still many others holding the booth.
The elevator had been inspected in July, and no problem had been found.
The building, formerly known as John Hancock Center, is the fourth tallest skyscraper in the city. It was renamed as "875 North Michigan Avenue" earlier this year.
