NATO has formally accused Russia of violating the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF), the agency said on Tuesday. The agreement, signed in 1987, freed Europe from land-based nuclear missiles. The organization also issued a statement supporting the US accusations of Russian violations.
"The allies concluded that Russia has developed and deployed a missile system, 9M729, which violates the INF Treaty and poses significant risks to Euro-Atlantic security," NATO foreign ministers said in a statement following a meeting.
US gives ultimatum of 60 days to Russia
US diplomat chief Mike Pompeo gave Russia a 60-day deadline Tuesday to comply "fully" with the nuclear arms treaty known as INF, according to France Presse. The statement came after Washington threatened to pull out of the Russian default agreement.
"The United States declares today that Russia has substantially violated the treaty and will suspend our obligations (...) in 60 days, unless Russia complies fully and verifiably," Pompeo said after a NATO meeting in which it received the support of the allies.
