Washington will respond to violence and intimidation directed at US diplomats or Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó, White House national security adviser John Bolton said on Sunday.
"Any violence and intimidation against US diplomatic personnel, Venezuelan democratic leader Juan Guiado [sic] or the National Assembly itself would represent a serious attack on the rule of law and will be received with a meaningful response," Bolton wrote.
Bolton's tweet comes after Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said earlier in the day that he ordered the country's foreign ministry to begin negotiations with the US within 30 days to create so-called mutual interest offices.
Earlier, the United States, along with 16 nations in the region, recognized Juan Guaidó as the interim president of Venezuela. Maduro quickly accused Washington of organizing a coup in the country. The president cut diplomatic ties with the United States and demanded that US diplomats leave the country in 72 hours.
