The United States government has announced the withdrawal of all diplomats and officials from the US embassy in Venezuela. In social networks, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the decision was made by the "deterioration" of the situation in the neighboring country.
"The US will remove the rest of the embassy staff this week. This decision reflects the deterioration of the situation in Venezuela, as well as the conclusion that the presence of [US] officials has become a constraint on US policy, "Pompeo told Twitter.
In a statement from the Office of the Treasury Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), the US government on Monday announced sanctions against a Russian-based bank for maintaining business with Venezuela's "illegitimate" president Nicolás Maduro.
Evrofinance Mosnarbank (VTB Bank), the Russian-Venezuelan-owned bank, is the first foreign financial institution to be punished for its ties to Venezuela. In this case, the bank had dealings with state oil company Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA).
By decision, assets will be frozen and prohibited transactions with individuals or entities within the United States or in transit in the country.
