The
United States Coast Guard said on Thursday (22) that it found wreckage within
the search area of the Titan, the submarine that disappeared last Sunday
(18). Shortly afterwards, the death of the passengers of the submarine Titan
was confirmed.
The
most consistent information about the fate of the Titan came in the early
afternoon, when the US Coast Guard reported finding the debris. “A debris field
was discovered within the search area for an ROV near Titanic. Specialists from
the unified command are evaluating the information,” he said on social media.
A
spokesperson for Pelagic Research Services then confirmed to CNN that its
remotely operated vehicle (ROV), the first to conduct a search for the missing
OceanGate submarine at the bottom of the sea, found the debris field.
Later,
during the press conference, the Coast Guard confirmed the deaths and reported
that the wreckage found indicated a catastrophic loss of pressure in the
submersible's cabin. “On behalf of the US Coast Guard, I extend my condolences
to the families. I can only imagine what this has been like for them and I hope
this discovery brings some comfort at this very difficult time.”
The
deadline estimated by the authorities of the United States for the duration of
the oxygen on the Titan ran out on the morning of this Thursday (22). On the
afternoon of last Tuesday (20), in a press conference, the captain of the First
District of the Coast Guard Jamie Frederick stated that the Titan still had 40
hours of oxygen, time that ran out this morning.
